The MenB vaccine helps protect against meningococcal group B bacteria that can cause serious illnesses, including meningitis and sepsis. It’s given to children when they’re 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 1 year old.
While anyone can contract MenB, certain age groups and high-risk individuals are particularly vulnerable:
Infants & Toddlers: Primary risk group given routine doses early in childhood.
Teens & Young Adults (Ages 16–23): Higher transmission rates occur in communal living environments like university dorms, boarding schools, or military barracks.
People with Specific Health Conditions: Individuals with functional or anatomic asplenia (no working spleen), complement component deficiencies, or sickle cell disease.
Occupational Risk Groups: Laboratory workers routinely exposed to Neisseria meningitidis.
Targeted Protection: Specifically engineered to combat group B strains, which are responsible for the majority of meningococcal disease cases.
Common Side Effects: Generally mild and resolve in 1–2 days. Expected reactions include injection site soreness/redness, low-grade fever, fatigue, or mild muscle aches.

Important Note: MenB vaccines only protect against Group B strains. They do not protect against groups A, C, W, or Y (covered by the separate MenACWY vaccine).
